The Mortal Kombat franchise is one of the biggest gaming franchises out there, which has always made it ready for a movie adaptation. Hollywood took a crack at the ’90s and while it’s not… cool. It is better than a lot of other video game to movie adaptations. It has all the characters dressed in appropriate costumes, and violently killing each other, which is a bit funny. It didn’t age gracefully, but it was something that was appreciated relatively at least. However, fans wanted something with a little more edge, and a bigger budget, and WB decided to do just that. It wasn’t great either, but it was brutal and bloody, so it was on the right track.
2021 did well enough to warrant a sequel, but we’ve heard very little about it. However, it seems that it may not be very far. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon told a fan on Twitter that he’s been reading some “exciting” scenarios for Mortal Kombat 2So there are definitely written drafts of the movie ready to go. It is unclear if he was reading multiple scripts by different writers with different stories or if they were just different drafts of the same general story. Either way, the liability probably doesn’t stop at Boon. Adaptations tend to go right over the heads of the creators, but if they’re lucky, the studio and producers will often let them consult on the movie. It is unclear why Boone was involved Mortal Kombat 2 It is, but it’s great to hear that there’s a story in place.

As of now, we have no idea when we can expect the movie. There’s a good chance the movie is getting ready to shoot in 2023 if the script is in place and we’ll probably see it in 2024. If a new Mortal Kombat game is on the way, we can expect a release or announcement that might be related to the movie in some way for marketing purposes only.
